Milk production during September 2017 in the top 23 U.S. states 16.175 billion pounds, up 1.2% from September 2016.
The USDA says production per cow was 1,851 pounds, the highest since the series of reports started in 2003, and the total number of milk cows, 8.737 million head, was up 73,000 head on the year.
California was the top U.S. producer with the highest number of dairy cows, followed by Wisconsin in both categories, and Colorado claimed the top per cow average, followed closely by Michigan.
